Laura Owings moved to Memphis at the early age of seven. She graduated from Evangelical Christian School (ECS) in 1998. Thereafter, Ms. Owings attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas as a Provost Scholarship Recipient from 1998 through 2002. She received her baccalaureate degree in history. While in college, Ms. Owings participated in many activities, and she was the Marketing Editor of the school yearbook and volunteered in Steppin’ Out, a community service organization to provide help to the needy. Ms. Owings then decided to fulfill her dream of becoming an attorney, and after a little encouragement from her mother, she attended the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law.
While in law school, Ms. Owings achieved much academic success, whereby she received the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award in 2006 and was the William B. Leffler Scholarship Recipient from 2003 and 2004. She also served as a Notes and Comments Editor for the University of Memphis Law Review and graduated magna cum laude, as she had the sixth highest grade point average in her law school class. It was during this time that Ms. Owings completed a summer internship with the United States Postal Service, Law Department, where she researched employment law issues, and she has worked as a technical writer at International Paper. These internships gave Ms. Owings valuable insight into the real world, which has served her well in her law career
